Christmas in Germany

Many people in Germany have an Advent wreath. German children receive an Advent calendar that has 24 doors. The first door is opened on 01.12. . You can find small surprises behind each door e.g. a picture, chocolate, sweets or small toys.
home made Plätzchen
People in Germany like to bake Christmas biscuits. They are called “Plätzchen” and we decorate them with icing sugar, jam, nuts or icing. There are also “Plätzchen” which contain marzipan. In Baden-Württemberg, people like a special kind of “Plätzchen”. Their name is “Springerle” and they taste of aniseed. We also like gingerbread and speculoos. Have you already seen them in English supermarkets? Families in Germany like baking Christmas biscuits together with their children.

In Germany, Christmas markets are very popular. People like to go there to buy Christmas presents and to eat German food. There are sausages in different variations, e.g. „rote Wurst“ and „Currywurst“. If you prefer sweet food, you can also taste “Magenbrot” (a kind of gingerbread) and “gebrannte Mandeln” (roasted almonds).
Lebkuchen or gingerbread

Christmas in Germany is different from the English Christmas. In Germany, the 24.12.is an important day. This day is called “Heiligabend”. People decorate their Christmas trees shortly before or on the 24.12. . In the evening of the 24.12. families come together to celebrate. There is no special dinner for “Heiligabend”, but many families eat traditional dishes like sausages and potato salad. After the dinner families sing and play a musical instrument. Other families go to church and watch a nativity play. The church or the Christmas dinner is followed by the giving of Christmas presents. Sometimes a member of the family dresses up as Santa or all the family leaves the room with the Christmas tree and the presents are put under the tree by one family member.

In Germany, the 25th and 26thDecember are holidays. Christmas is often a family celebration. All come together and enjoy their Christmas meal. In Germany, poultry and other meaty dishes are popular for the Christmas meal. For pudding, people have e.g. baked stuffed apples or “Stollen”. “Stollen” is a popular Christmas “cake”. It is sweet and stuffed with glacé fruits but there are a lot of different variations.
In some parts of Germany (e.g. Baden-Württemberg) the 06.01. is a holiday. It is called “Dreikönigstag”(=Epiphany). Between Christmas and Epiphany, carol singers go from house to house and collect money for poor people.

Traditional Christmas in Spain (part 2 Spanish and English)

Las NAVIDADES tradicionales en España
Traditional Christmas in Spain. Parte II (Part II)

People give this plant for Nochebuena as a gift

December 24th ‘NOCHEBUENA’ is family dinner night. His Majesty the King of Spain gives his annual speech, greeting the Spanish and summarizing the most important news of the year and noting some positive values of the Spanish to help others.
This is the start of the big family dinner with cabbage, lamb, turkey or capon, and turrones and other sweets. Then, at midnight, if you are Catholic, you would normally go to the 'Rooster Mass' in the church.

December 25th 'Navidad'. It is also a very family orientated day. Families have a big lunch until late (2:00 or 3:00 p.m.) On this days is also the traditional Christmas Concert in the Auditorio Nacional de Musica of Madrid.
the Christmas concert

December 31st 'Nochevieja'. It celebrates a great dinner with family and / or friends. Just a few minutes before midnight all come together in front of the TV watching the clock of the Puerta del Sol in Madrid, and with a glass full of 12 grapes. You can also go to the Puerta del Sol and eat them there but it will be crowded by many Spanish revellers and tourists from around the world.
The Tradition is that if you eat 12 grapes in the last 12 seconds of the year and without choking on them, you'll have good luck next year. Every second the clock bell rings and you have to eat a grape.

Not to be confused with 'quarters' which sound just before the bell to warn that we must be prepared. After the grapes, we give hugs and kisses. Then we throw rockets and firecrackers.
Young people will celebrate the holiday in bars, nightclubs, hotels, restaurants or house partys overnight.

December 1st 'Año Nuevo'. It is spent with friends or relaxing at home with family.

January 5th.
All children go with their family to see the Cavalcade in their city or town. On the streets there are parades with the Three Wise Men, called Melchor, Gaspar and Balthazar. They bring gifts (gold, frankincense and myrrh) to the baby Jesus. And with that they bring gifts to all children in their homes.
The Ride is a Christmas parade with colorful floats, the three kings (Wise Men), their pages (assistants), animals, gifts, etc.. They throw candy and sweets into the crowd of children.

January 6th. 'Día de los Reyes Magos'. Upon waking in the morning, we open all the gifts that Wise Men have brought for us. But if you've been bad, you'll see that they bring you sugar charcoal.
Today is the day of eating Roscón de Reyes with a dark hot chocolate. Yum, Yum. It makes a great meal and ending family Christmas.
But we must not forget the spirit of solidarity.

¡FELIZ NAVIDAD Y PRÓSPERO AÑO NUEVO!

Weihnachten in Deutschland (Christmas in Germany)

Here is a text by our German assistant Angela: Do you understand the gist?

Weihnachten in Deutschland
